This stunning Gothic-style building, known for its intricate facade and steeped in history, has been a city landmark since the 1890s. Today, it houses Haigh’s Chocolates on the ground floor, an Adelaide institution renowned for its premium handcrafted chocolates.
Directly across the Mall, on the other side, sits Charlesworth Nuts, another beloved local treasure. Whether you’re a fan of chocolate sultanas, roasted almonds, or nut mixes, it’s hard to resist stepping inside for a treat. Personally, I have a weakness for their chocolate sultanas, making it nearly impossible to walk past without indulging. For any chocolate lover, these two stores make for a deliciously tempting entrance to Rundle Mall.
A Shopper’s Paradise
Stretching over 528 meters, Rundle Mall boasts more than 700 retail stores and 300 services, making it one of the longest and busiest malls in Australia. Major department stores such as David Jones and Myer anchor the mall, alongside an array of global brands, local boutiques, and specialty stores.
One of my favourite stops is the historic Adelaide Arcade, built in 1885 and once hailed as the most contemporary shopping precinct in the Southern Hemisphere. Walking through its beautiful Victorian-style architecture, with intricate tiling, a grand central staircase, and vintage charm, is like stepping back in time while still being immersed in modern retail experiences.
At its Rundle Mall entrance, the Adelaide Arcade features a Victorian-era fountain that adds a touch of elegance and historical significance to the Mall. Sadly, during the Mall’s repaving, the original circular base of the fountain was removed, but the fountain itself remains as a reminder of a bygone age.
Further along the Mall is The Regent Arcade, another beautiful passageway with a fascinating history. The building itself is what truly captivates me. The upper floor once housed the grand Regent Cinema, a majestic theatre from the golden age of film. Though the cinema is now long gone, its space has been repurposed to house Dymocks Bookshop, a charming and peaceful retreat where one can easily while away the time browsing through books.
A Changing Landscape: From Paving to Greenery
A few years ago, Rundle Mall underwent a major revitalization project, which included repaving the entire precinct. During this process, much of the existing greenery was removed, leaving the Mall looking sleek but somewhat harsh, especially under the summer sun. While the new paving was aesthetic and modern, many people missed the softer, more shaded feel of the old Mall.
Thankfully, in the years since, the young trees that were planted during the upgrade have matured, providing much-needed shade and creating a more inviting environment for visitors. This reintroduction of greenery has helped restore balance to the Mall, making it more comfortable and welcoming.

Rundle Mall isn’t just about shopping—it’s a cultural experience. Among its most famous features are the public art installations that add personality and humor to the space.
