Discover Sidewood Estate: A Hidden Gem in Hahndorf for Food, Wine and Relaxation

If you’re looking for a memorable wine and dining experience in South Australia, the Sidewood Estate Cellar Door and Restaurant on the outskirts of Hahndorf is a must-visit. Just a short drive from Adelaide, Sidewood Estate Restaurant and Cellar Door is nestled at the corner of Mount Barker Road and River Road, this charming venue combines a delightful culinary offering with a relaxed atmosphere and a touch of whimsy.

Getting There - How to Find Sidewood Estate in Hahndorf

Located on the western side of Hahndorf, the estate is easily accessible. If you’re coming from the west, take the second right turn after the freeway exit roundabout. From the east, it’s conveniently situated on the left-hand side, just past the Hahndorf Fruit and Veg Market.

The entrance is via River Road, where you’ll find two separate car park entrances:

  1. The first car park is dedicated to Cellar Door visitors and features a tarmac surface for easy access.
  2. The second, larger car park, ideal for Restaurant patrons, has a stone hardcore surface. Both car parks are interconnected, so you can easily move between them if needed.

Sidewood Restaurant

Entering the Sidewood Estate Restaurant is an experience in itself. From the car park, a charming flat wooden bridge-like causeway leads you over a small dry creek bed (perhaps flowing in winter). Adding a whimsical touch, an Alice in Wonderland-inspired Cheshire Cat statue greets you on the right as you approach the entrance.

Inside, the restaurant exudes a classy family-friendly modern farmhouse vibe, featuring a gallery wall containing artwork, sculptures, and a striking stone chimney that evokes the warmth of a family living room. The layout includes a bar area to the right and a seating area to the left, providing plenty of space for diners to relax.

For those who prefer al fresco dining, the far side of the restaurant opens onto a covered veranda with additional seating. This space features misters, delivering cooling water vapour — a welcome reprieve on hot days — as well as strings of outdoor lighting, retractable blinds, and heaters to ensure comfort year-round. Beyond the veranda, there’s steps down to a terrace with a casual seating area, plus designated zones for games like Boules and Finska. Surrounding these are cozy, covered pergola booths that seat I would estimate up to 4 possibly 6 people, perfect for a more intimate outdoor setting.

Despite the restaurant’s proximity to the road, the landscape design cleverly blocks out any view of traffic, replacing it with serene vistas of the hillside.

Sitting on the veranda, under the cooling misters and gazing out at the relaxed yet dynamic South Australian landscape, we felt like we were on holiday staying at a resort.

Food at Sidewood Restuarant

The restaurant’s menu, available online, features a selection of small plates. meals and wood-fired pizzas. On our visit, we enjoyed:

  • Pepperoni Pizza: Cooked in the wood oven at the veranda’s end, this pizza stood out with its spicy flavour and light, perfectly soft base.
  • King Prawns: My wife’s choice, these were beautifully prepared and paired well with the side salad we ordered.

For dessert, we shared the pavlova. While the menu described it as a Native Pavlova, it turned out to be a more classic version. It’s worth checking on the day if you’re hoping for native flavours, but this dessert was delicious nonetheless.

Please check their website for the latest food offerings, they even do Takeaway Wood Oven Pizzas on certain days of the week.

Sidewood Cellar Door: A Treat for Wine and Cider Lovers

After lunch, we made our way to the Cellar Door. While my wife sampled the wines, I turned my attention to the Sidewood ciders, staying true to the ethos of our site, It’s Not About the Wine.

The standout for me was the strawberry and apple cider. Its bold strawberry flavor made it incredibly refreshing and enjoyable, but be mindful: with its higher sugar content, this cider packs a punch with elevated alcohol levels. Just one bottle could take you over the legal driving limit, so enjoy responsibly.

Final Thoughts

Sidewood Estate offers an inviting mix of fine dining, wine (and cider!) tasting, and outdoor leisure in a beautiful setting. Whether you’re looking to indulge in a long lunch, explore new wines and ciders, or simply relax with friends, this venue has something for everyone. Its thoughtful design, delicious food, and welcoming atmosphere make it a standout destination in Hahndorf.

Plan your visit soon — and don’t forget to save room for dessert!
